WordPress SEO Audit Checklist 2026

Why WordPress Sites Need Regular SEO Audits

WordPress powers 43% of all websites. That means your competition is massive. A regular SEO audit isn't optional — it's how you stay ahead.

Most WordPress SEO issues come from three sources: plugin conflicts, theme problems, and content gaps. A 30-minute audit once a month catches these before they tank your rankings.

The 15-Point WordPress SEO Audit Checklist

Technical SEO (5 minutes)

1. Check your permalink structure. Go to Settings → Permalinks. Use "Post name" structure (/%postname%/). The "Plain" structure gives you ?p=123 URLs which are terrible for SEO.

2. Verify your XML sitemap. Most SEO plugins (Yoast, Rank Math) generate one automatically. Check yoursite.com/sitemap.xml. If it returns 404, your sitemap isn't working.

3. Test your robots.txt. Visit yoursite.com/robots.txt. Make sure it's not blocking important pages. A common mistake is blocking /wp-admin/ but accidentally blocking /wp-content/ too.

4. Check for broken links. Use a tool like our Link Dashboard or a free crawler. Broken links waste crawl budget and create bad user experience.

5. Verify HTTPS. Your entire site should load over HTTPS. Mixed content (HTTP resources on HTTPS pages) triggers browser warnings and hurts trust signals.

On-Page SEO (10 minutes)

6. Audit your title tags. Every page should have a unique title under 60 characters. Check your top 10 pages — are titles optimized for keywords or just generic?

7. Check meta descriptions. Same as titles — unique, under 160 characters, include your primary keyword naturally.

8. Verify H1 tags. Each page should have exactly one H1 tag. It should contain your primary keyword. Multiple H1 tags confuse search engines.

9. Review heading hierarchy. H1 → H2 → H3 → H4. Don't skip levels. A page with H1 → H3 → H2 is structurally wrong.

10. Check image alt text. Every image should have descriptive alt text. "IMG_20260725.jpg" tells Google nothing. "WordPress SEO audit checklist" tells Google everything.

11. Verify internal links. Each page should link to 3-5 other pages on your site. Internal links help Google understand your site structure and distribute page authority.

12. Check content length. Your main pages should have 1,000+ words. Thin content (under 300 words) rarely ranks well.

Schema & Rich Results (5 minutes)

13. Test structured data. Use Google's Rich Results Test. Check if your pages have valid JSON-LD schema. Missing schema means missing rich results in search.

14. Verify Open Graph tags. Share your page on Facebook or LinkedIn. Does the preview show your title, description, and image? Missing OG tags mean ugly social shares.

15. Check Core Web Vitals. Go to PageSpeed Insights and test your homepage. Focus on LCP (under 2.5s), CLS (under 0.1), and INP (under 200ms).
