SEO for AI-Generated Content: Google's Policy and Best Practices

What Google Actually Says

Let's clear this up: Google's guidance says AI-generated content is not against their guidelines. Content generated primarily for search ranking manipulation is — regardless of whether a human or AI wrote it.

That's it. That's what happens when policy. Everything else is interpretation.

The March 2024 core update explicitly said they're focusing on "helpful content" regardless of how it's produced. If your AI content is helpful, original, and demonstrates expertise, it can rank.

But here's the catch: most AI content isn't any of those things. It's generic. It rephrases the top 3 results. Google's systems are surprisingly good at detecting this.

Where AI Content Fails (and How to Fix It)

Problem 1: No original data or opinion. AI models average what's already out there. Your content ends up saying "the temperature should be moderate" instead of "set your thermostat to 68°F — I've put this to the test 64°F through 72°F and 68 saves the most energy."

Fix: layer in original data. Even a single screenshot of a real test transforms generic content into something EEAT-worthy.

Problem 2: Shallow structure. AI loves bullet points and symmetrical sections. Real expert content is messier. Sometimes you spend three paragraphs on a subtopic because it matters. Sometimes you skip the obvious stuff.

Problem 3: No author authority. Google looks for who wrote it. If your byline is "Admin" or "Content Team," you're fighting uphill. Use real names, real bios, and links to the author's other work.

My Workflow for AI-Assisted Content

I write the outline and key points by hand. Then I use AI to expand each section. Then I rewrite every paragraph — changing examples, adding personal observations, and cutting generic language.

The AI handles the skeleton. I handle the meat. Total time per article is about half of writing from scratch.

EEAT and AI: The Practical Checklist

Before publishing AI-assisted content, verify:

  • Does it include specific numbers, dates, or references?
  • Does it reflect a point of view, not just consensus?
  • Would someone with real experience disagree with any part of it?
  • Is the author's expertise clear from the bio?

If the answer to any of these is no, rewrite until it's yes.
