Google Business Profile Optimization Guide 2026 - Complete tutorial for optimizing GBP with categories, reviews, and Q&A

The 9 Signals That Actually Matter

After checking hundreds of local profiles. Most advice is outdated or just wrong. The advice is still affects rankings in 2026:

1. Primary category selection

2. Proximity to searcher

3. Review quantity AND recency

4. Review diversity (not just 5-star — some 4-star is healthy)

5. Profile completeness (every field filled)

6. Q&A activity

7. Posts frequency

8. Photo volume and freshness

9. Citation consistency across the web

Most people nail #1 and #5 but ignore #6 and #8 entirely. For a structured approach to building citations that drive local rankings, see our local citation building framework. And once your citations are solid, reputation management is next — our reviews and reputation management guide covers how to get more reviews without violating Google's guidelines.

Choosing the Right Primary Category

This is the single most important field. Not "what describes your business" — "what search do you want to rank for."

A plumber shouldn't pick "Plumber" if they specialize in water heaters. "Water heater installation service" is more specific and has less competition. Google lets you change this, so test different categories and watch your impressions for 2 weeks.

You get 10 secondary categories. Use them all. But the primary one is where 80% of the ranking power lives.

Reviews: Quality Over Quantity

50 five-star reviews from last year are less valuable than 10 reviews from this month. Recency is a massive ranking factor that people ignore.

Respond to every review within 48 hours. Google has confirmed this affects ranking. Keep responses short ("Thanks, Sarah, glad we could help!") but vary them so they don't look templated.

Don't delete negative reviews unless they violate Google's policies. A mix of ratings looks authentic. A perfect 5.0 with 100 reviews looks fake.

Posts That Rank

GBP posts don't directly boost rankings, but they increase click-through rates. And CTR is a ranking signal — indirectly.

Post at least twice a week. Offers, events, new products, behind-the-scenes — mix it up. Include an image (minimum 720 x 720) and a clear CTA.

Posts expire after 7 days unless they're offers. Schedule a reminder to repost.

Q&A: The Forgotten Goldmine

Most business owners never touch Q&A. That's a mistake. Google surfaces Q&A prominently, and unanswered questions make you look bad.

Answer every question yourself proactively. Seed 5-10 common questions and answer them in detail. Use keywords naturally — "How late is your HVAC repair service open in Austin?" — this is a ranking opportunity that's completely under your control.
