FAQ Schema: When to Use It and Common Mistakes That Trigger Warnings

FAQ Schema Isn't Free Real Estate
Google's John Mueller said it himself in 2024: FAQ schema won't get you rich snippets anymore. On desktop, rich results for FAQ are basically gone. On mobile? They're collapsed by default. So why bother?
Because it still works for voice search, and properly marked-up Q&A helps you own the "People also ask" boxes. But you've gotta be smart about it.
When to Actually Use FAQ Schema
Use it when each Q&A pair is genuinely a question someone types into a search bar. Not "What is our mission statement?" Nobody searches that. Real questions like "Does product X integrate with Salesforce?" or "How long does shipping take?" β those are fair game. For a complete overview of all schema types and how to implement them, see our schema markup guide for beginners.
From my experience, sites get penalized for slapping FAQ schema on every paragraph with a question mark. Don't do that.
The Five Warnings You're Inviting
1. FAQ on a product page that already has Product schema. Google's validator throws a "multiple incompatible types" warning. Pick one.
2. Less than two Q&A pairs. FAQ schema requires at least two. One Q&A isn't a FAQ β it's a fact.
3. Missing acceptedAnswer text. You need Text inside acceptedAnswer, not just suggestedAnswer. The validator won't catch this in the testing tool but will in Search Console.
4. FAQ on a how-to page. If you've got HowTo schema, adding FAQ schema for the same content triggers a warning. Google sees them as overlapping types.
5. Using FAQ for pricing questions. "How much does it cost?" in FAQ schema? Google's been deprecating pricing-in-FAQ since their 2023 update. Shift pricing Q&A to Product schema or a dedicated pricing page.
The Fix
Test everything in the Rich Results Test before deploying. And here's the thing: if you're getting "missing field" warnings for @type or @context, you're probably pasting JSON-LD wrong. Use a template β don't hand-write this stuff.
FAQ schema works when it's sparse, real, and complementary. When it's not, it's a manual action waiting to happen. If you're also implementing Product schema on e-commerce pages, make sure you've covered all required properties β our Product schema guide covers the exact fields you need.
